How To Achieve A Boho Style With Your Brighton Interior Designer

Boho, why do we all love this style so much?

Is it because it creates a feeling of a relaxed, Zen, uninhibited style that we all think we’ve got in us but don’t get the opportunity to show openly because life gets in the way?

Our lives can be very stressful, the family are ‘driving you bonkers’ and the last thing you’re thinking about doing on a Monday evening after you’ve wrangled three kids into bed, after an exhausting ‘feeding time at the zoo’ session, is sitting down with your legs crossed trying to shut out the nightmare day and ‘hmmmm’ quietly to yourself.

Let’s be honest you’d rather crack open a bottle of wine and rock silently in a chair whilst staring at walls? That’s okay we all feel that way at times, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up on your home style altogether.

The point of Boho style, or Bohemian style in interior design, is to create a space that is eclectic, personal and free-spirited. It’s a fun way to create your own personal space as there are no real rules – it’s just a reflection of your own artistic, relaxed and creative vibe. It’s an unconventional approach to interior styling as it can be interpreted entirely by the individual.

That being said, there are many traits that people associate with the Boho style, including:

Colour and Texture: It’s important to choose the right base of warm, earthy tones like browns and greens and creams with vibrant accents such as magenta, turquoise, and orange. Use patterns and textures such as Moroccan rugs, embroidered pillows, woven throws and tons of macramé. You can throw in a variety of patterns and mix them up, including florals and tribal patterns and even geometrics. Boho draws on the various cultures from around the world, bring a sense of global awareness into your home.

Natural materials and eclectic furniture: Using natural materials like wood, rattan and wicker reflects the earthy vibe. Natural fibres and materials add to an organic, free-spirited and homey feel. You can embrace various styles of furniture, it is better to look for unique, vintage furniture or handmade pieces that can add character. Layer textiles, such as rugs, blankets, cushions and throws to create a cosy and inviting atmosphere. Overlapping rugs can really add to the look.

Art and Décor: Boho is often associated with artistic and creative communities. You should try and display a mixture of artwork, including paintings, prints, tapestry and wall hangings. You could personalise these using family pictures, travel experiences and interests.

Don’t forget about plants! Incorporate a variety of plants to add life and freshness. Use hanging planters, floor plants and succulents to bring the outside in. Include fresh flowers, try and aim for the wildflower theme giving the impression that you’re about to fashion a hair garland out of daisies and throw yourself around the garden with your arms outstretched!

Lighting: Aim for warm, ambient lighting with lanterns, fairy lights and candles. Mix and match different light sources like floor lamps, table lamps and wall lighting for a cosy glow.

Remember that achieving the Boho style is all about breaking rules and allowing your creativity to flourish. There are no strict guidelines as it can be unstructured and relaxed, which gives you the freedom to experiment! The goal… create a casual, stress-free environment, perfect for unwinding after a busy day. You never know, you might even find yourself meditating whilst sitting on the floor with your legs crossed after all.
